Adobe has priced itself out of the market with the Creative Cloud. Good alternatives available for free and low cost. Check out alternatives made by the company Serif. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

I work as a research assistant in the Reh Lab at the University of Washington. I mainly use Photoshop to compile various images off of FluoroView imaging software. To put it short, we take images of various cells with different markers and indicators and each of them come off as a different color. After saving each TIFF file in FluoroView and uploading them as a new layer in a Photoshop PSD, I can screen them to see which cells have multiple indicators or markers. I can then use Photoshop capabilities to see each layer separately and count which cells have multiple markers and which ones they have. The whole lab uses Adobe Bridge and Photoshop to do this. FluoroView cannot be used effectively to see each layer and count cells and Photoshop enables us to do so.
Photoshop can overlap various layers and you can choose which layers to see at which times, which helps when you are trying to see specific layers independently. Photoshop allows to make a completely new transparent layer to make marks on. Later, you can simply close the eye icon on this layer to remove all the marks you made and turn it back on when necessary. Photoshop can saturate certain colors that cannot be seen very well through the regular image.

Working at an ad agency, Adobe Photoshop is a huge part of our business! We use this and other Adobe products every single day. Half of our team are designers who use Photoshop to create billboard, web, banner, print and other such advertisements. One of the great things about Photoshop is that it's part of the Adobe platform, which means everything we create in Photoshop is transferable and immediately useable in many other Adobe products. Photoshop helps us be able to create drafts and edit them fast and efficiently.
Creating content. It's as simple as that. Whether you are starting something from or editing a previous design, Photoshop has all the tools you need to get the job done.

Photoshop is a great product. I'm not fan at all of Adobe's subscription strategy. There's simply no reason, why Photoshop would have to be part of a subscription.
