Zenefits has a great deal of capability ranging including onboarding, benefits, basic HR, payroll and compliance. I was attracted to the platform because of its breadth. I moved my companies to it from a provider that did not have the breadth of functionality--especially in the area of benefits. I wound up leaving after a year. During that time, I had numerous issues with payroll, taxes, customer service and the ethics of this business. While the business was recently sold to a new owner (Trinet), the same management team and same level of service/customer commitment still exists. Here is snapshot of the issues I ran into. Payroll: Inexplicably, one week paystubs were not visible to employees. The issue was fixed after a day, but then recurred. Then, a few months later, Zenefits forgot to take the funds out of my account on time, and had to scramble to make deposits on time. I tried to call support that payday ( a Friday) but they were closed! A payroll company closed on the most common payday. Thankfully, this impacted many customers so someone got ahold of an exec. The same issue occurred a few months later...I kid you not. Basic stuff...has to be bulletproof and my idea of payday is not to spend it fielding calls from my employees asking where their money is. Taxes: A bigger disaster than payroll. They do not know how to handle local taxes--to the point where you have to set up each and every jurisdiction even if you file in one master, and every time a new employee starts you do it again. And then, support moves the jurisdiction (a few weeks later) and then they withdraw the funds. An absolute mess of a design and gobs of wasted time. Tried explaining it many time, spent many hours back and forth making sure it was accurate. Regular tax filings were also made with errors--in one case, sent to the wrong agency and in the other, errors were made and corrected causing the agency to refund something they should not have. Each and every time there are tax issues, you open a support case and each and every time, you wait a very, very long time. Can't get someone from tax on the phone. Customer Service: When issues get resolved, it takes a very long time. Your relationship manager does very little to expedite. The Quickbooks online integration does not work. I gave them very specific info on how it was broken and in nine months they had done nothing to fix it. Had to write my own journal entries. Ethics: This one takes the cake. Due to the payroll and tax issues, I decided to move on to a different system at the end of the year. Would you believe me if I told you that Zenefits required me to maintain my account past the end of the year to be able to use the ACA compliance module? Yes, indeed. So--even though you paid them a healthy amount of money throughout the year, you had to maintain the account (and pay an additional fee) to be able to use the ACA module, and had to continue paying the fee until the IRS accepted the ACA filing or else would not have been allowed to make corrections. And--the pace of all of this was under the control of Zenefits--you had to submit data and wait for them to review and then submit more that they had not asked for. In my view, completely unethical. But wait--there is more! After I had termed, we learned that my old payroll provider had incorrectly filed zero dollar reports for the first quarter I had been with Zenefits. The fix for this was to simply re-file the reports Zenefits had filed. Do you think Zenefits did this? Heck no--it was not their fault so therefore, if I wanted them to refile they said the fee was $700! I highly doubt this fee would have existed had I still been a customer as I am sure it is common for a prior processor to do this. No--this was another thank you from Zenefits. And to top it all off, senior execs were well aware of this and signed off on the fees being appropriate. So know this when you choose to deal with them. They may be owned by someone else now, but the same pocket-picking people who could not competently process payroll and taxes run the place. There are so many better solutions out there. Do not waste your time with this company. I had hoped to have one complete solution for onboarding, benefits and basic HR.

I was interested in using Zenefits because they claim to be an All-in-One system. Not so! The app is useless and the scheduling feature is basically useless. There is no customer service! The only way to reach someone is by email. However, they somehow changed my email so I couldn't even do that! Don't use Zenefits! Check reviews!! If you ever have a problem, you will continue to have a problem because they do not help. I used Zenefits a few years ago and decided to try a new company that was cheaper and had more features that I was interested in. I emailed (the only way to contact) Zenefits and said " I would like to cancel my account." I never received an email or any communication back from Zenefits. I went to log in the following week and realized my account had been closed and I lost access to my company's info. They never contacted me to see when my end date would be. Then I find out I was also short of 6 months with them and they would not issue W2's to my employees. Huge hassle!! I decided to give them another try a couple of years later. I made sure to stay with them for a complete year. We stopped using the scheduling feature in Zenefits because it's basically useless as my employees cannot see their schedules. So we started using a different app for scheduling that is desktop and app friendly. Toward the end of the year, our scheduling app announced it would be adding the payroll option. Yay! I want an All-in-One system (what I thought I was getting with Zenefits). So I waited to tell Zenefits until I processed our last payroll with Zenefits. I emailed them to tell them I wanted to cancel my account and not have it auto-renew. As always, I don't receive any response. I keep checking my account but nothing is happening and it is still active. I finally discover a way to call them. After several attempts at calling over several days, I get ahold of someone and they tell me that I will still be charged for another year of service because I did not give them notice 30 days prior. WHAT!?! This company is a scam and stealing money from businesses! None! Way more problems started by using Zenefits.

The UI feels newer than some other payroll systems. The support people are very friendly and try very hard to help you despite the inadequate software and specialist teams they coordinate with. The functionality is terrible. I can't think of one task I've attempted to complete that has been fraught with errors. Saving dynamic employee earnings (fringe benefits for person A but not B) doesn't exist. Bulk upload off-cycle payroll is a terrible experience. Sync to QBO is non-existent (in its current unusable form). There is no option to include payroll deductions without including payroll contributions. The dedicated account manager is non-existent. Until recently, there was no report that reconciled what Zenefits debited from your account with the payroll reports. Currently, Zenefits has a bank transactions report and a bank transactions DETAIL report THAT DON'T AGREE WITH EACH OTHER. Tax notifications sometimes get answered months after submitting the letter to Zenefits. For some time, Zenefits software wouldn't appropriately cap 401k contributions resulting in overcontributions for many employees. For some time call-back times from support were > 3 hours. I was very surprised to see relatively decent reviews of this product. It has undoubtedly been the worst software experience I've ever had (not just payroll software). I wish migrating payroll providers wasn't such an arduous task. Payroll/Benefits software.

I thought we were getting a very comprehensive 1 stop shop platform. benefits providers such as 401K (guideline), workers comp (embroker), medical (one digital) have been really great service providers. I am very happy we switched to using these alternative providers. They are quick and easy to use - cant say the same about the service at ADP. Their support is lacking especially the specialist teams. The initial support team is very kind but the specialist teams are completely unresponsive and you cant access them directly. We received a tax notice end of Q3 from the IRS that led us to find a historical data problem we were having. It's January and my Q3 tax issue has not been fixed (it was picked up on Sunday January 26th by the 3rd tax specialist, who asked me for the same documents I'v uploaded twice.) My data issue was ignored despite me re-opening the case multiple times. The issue kept getting closed as the engineering team assured me that "the reports were incorrect but that the data on the back end was fine." As a result several of our W-2s were posted this week with more than half the year's data missing. This was such an easy thing to avoid and fix but it was completely miss-handled. Even at this point there is no way to escalate the problem. They have a 15 day period for issues to be resolved, every-time I have had to re-open the issue the wait period re-starts. Overall the experience is extremely frustrating. Apart from this issue the platform is not super flexible and has fallen short of accommodating our specific PTO program, reporting needs, etc. They told me to implement mid quarter that was a mistake it through off all the accounting because we didnt have enough time to get everything set up properly since you don't have back-end support its really hard to fix post implementation There are on going data issues that the team cannot seem to get right. I call zenefits like 3-5 times a week to try and follow up on these issues but they are still pending since Q3 we switched over to zenefits in Q3. Good afternoon Bea, We are sorry to hear you were less than satisfied with your experience. Although not perfect, we are purposeful. Our goal is to provide a quality experience for all of our customers. We will take your feedback and use it to improve both the UX and our product. We wish you the best!

Cheap. Cost about $40/mo per employee for admin fees including Time and Attendance, Payroll, and health plan management fees (FSA, etc). No accountability, buggy platform, poor support. My employees work hard and I like to give them a great HR experience. Zenefits was not it. Our experience was horrible migrating from a PEO to Zenefits for HR management. Specific issues: Time and Attendance never synced to payroll correctly causing very unhappy employees. They pushed lots of manual time and attendance calculations (overtime) for each payroll period to us. Medical and dental employee deductions didnt sync when we employees selected insurance from Zenefits. This caused high then low payrolls (and they got shorted on cash the way healthcare is tax deductible when make up deductions were made). Also, the worst part was the buying insurance through them. We signed up with them on January for an April migration. They neglected gathering key information which kept our employees without health insurance for 15 days after we canceled the previous service. They did make it retroactivebut employees had no insurance for 15 daysand complicated manual insurance submittals. They took no responsibility for their negligence and pushed all costs of their mistakes to us. Responsiveness: Their team typically responded the next day on the most urgent issues (rarely same day)and normal issues required multiple follow-ups on our side to get updates. Not good for urgent payroll related issues caused by their sub-par reporting. We purchased ZenPayroll through them as their preferred payroll provider, but they provided no guidance on how to configure it with Zenefits. If you need cheap, Zenefits may fit the bill. If you want happy employeesrun, dont want from Zenefits.

UX design. It's hard to point out the good when the bad is overwhelming. Lack of customer service training and infrastructure. I was very happy with Zenefits... until I needed something. If you're a small company looking to implement your new HR system, and your budget is tight so you can't afford a larger platform, Zenefits is NOT FOR YOU, I suggest you wait until you can pay for a more reliable partner. Everything will be fine until inevitably, an issue arises and you need customer support. Then, you'll pay the price for being a small business. We small business have small teams wearing many hats, and therefore we need great partners. Partners that are going to take us by the hand and respond promptly with solutions. Do not expect a fast response from customer service. Do not expect your response to be good once you receive it weeks or months later. All the contrary, they've just made it harder for you to contact customer service in the first place. I still have tickets open from last January or February and I've got 2 "responses", both saying that my tickets were assigned to a specialist, and that they'll be contacting me. Never happened. Too bad I had just renewed for another year. The system in general will do the minimum but the features are too basic, and the reporting is horrible. The integration with QuickBooks unusable for real mapping and labor/project expense tracking. Not a good format for data manipulation. Again, if you need help, look elsewhere. HRIS

We used QuickBooks Online Payroll from 2014 to 2019 and transitioned to Zenefits Payroll at the beginning of 2020 when Zenefits Payroll shortly after Zenefits Payroll became available in all 50 states. We made the transition to provide our employees with one powerful app to view their paystubs, request time off, view their benefits information, manage their pre-tax spending accounts, and look up contact information of their fellow team members.
Zenefits is well suited for companies of all sizes, and especially fast-growing businesses who are looking to efficiently scaling their People Operations function while also providing an exceptional experience to your employees and contractors.
Payroll services in all 50 states, including payroll tax filings Integrations with tools like QuickBooks, Google Workspace, Slack, and Human Interest (401(k)) Simple yet powerful mobile app for employees to access information including paystubs, benefits, and time off requests Streamlined admin portal for People Ops professionals
Customer service response times are sometimes slow but are improving QuickBooks integration could be improved to include employee and department (class) level information Ability to clone templates in the Hiring section of the app

Zenefits is being used across the whole organization. We use Zenefits for clocking in/out as well as keeping track of our benefits, pay stubs, and time off. It's easy and fast. We can also keep track of our timecards as well to make sure there are no issues with [them].
Every morning before starting work I log into my Zenefits to clock in and get my day started. It allows you to keep track of your timesheets, pay stubs, benefits, and also your time-off requests as well. What my company uses Zenefits for is amazing. Never have any real issues with it other than the typical slow page loading that occurs with any website/software. It's definitely useful to be able to go and check your hours or your PTO whenever you need to, access to pay stubs whenever needed as well.
Time cards Benefits Pay stubs Time off requests
Sometimes it lags and takes its time loading when trying to clock back in in a rush Should make it to where you can submit an error with your time card so you don't have to reach out to your manager every time Maybe an automated clock in/out system if you take your lunches at [the] same time every day

It's being used across our entire company as our HR department and benefits management platform. We use it as a way to approve and track PTO, sick days, vacation, and other time off situations. We also, like to use it as our benefits platform, org chart, and performance management system.
I feel that small to medium-sized businesses, that have a need for an HR department, but don't have the budget to spend, would greatly benefit from Zenefits. They are very easy to work with and integrate into your environment. I wouldn't recommend if you have the option for dedicated HR staff, at least not as your primary HR department. In that case, implementing your internal HR department with Zenefits might be a good idea.
Our medical benefits are clear and easy to access. Vacation tracking and reporting comes in very handy. Managing the performance of the team is very simple.
If PTO calendars were made to be editable, that would help in some situations.

The original reasoning around moving to Zenefits - recommendation from a colleague, cost and the reduction of workforce, app availability, and integrations were the main reasons for the initial change. That said, the issues we have experienced are deal breakers.
From my experience this may be a product that meets the needs for well-run smaller institutions. I could see Zen being a good solution for businesses with 1-10 employees that all live in the same state. The design of the product and ease of use are good and should save time and money for these businesses. Zenefits must solve their customer support issue. If they want to be around for the long haul and attract larger clients, well trained, highly engaged customer service, tax service, and IT support people (like their onboarding team whom I would rate highly) will need to be part of their business model. Let me emphasize the word PEOPLE. At this point in our world it's becoming more and more obvious that tech goes so far, and when it fails well trained people are the correct answer. My advise would be to concentrate people and support where immediacy is most necessary. Consider that it's the end user, the employee, that hurts most from a failure in this area, and that I own that - Zenefits should too.
Integration of HR, payroll, and insurance. These integrations are becoming commonplace, and are necessary for smaller companies to compete. Cost is always a factor with growing companies and Zenefits is affordable.
CUSTOMER SERVICE - Zenefits needs significant improvements in customer service. Most of the serious issues we experience would be solved with well trained people who are experienced in the payroll space and are available to clients like us. TAX DEPARTMENT - The tax payments dept. is severely backed up (months for a relevant response). Tax payments to States income tax and unemployment tax is not something I ever want to worry about, or get late or non-filing fees for. PAYROLL ISSUES REQUIRE IMMEDIATE RESPONSE - Many issues in payroll require immediate high-level response and our company (and I) will accept no less. We waited for hours, days, and even in a couple instances a month or more, and in a few instances never received a response. I was trained by Zenefits not to trust them, and quickly learned to take the issue in my own hands and begin to find a workaround. CONNECTION ISSUES - Again, this gets extremely frustrating when there is an issue. Doesn't it always seem to happen at the worst time, exacerbating issues and turning a problem into a full-blown emergency? If only someone were available I could call for support. INSURANCE - This one hit us on two levels: our brokers and our ROI. We have a long-term relationship with our insurance brokers who have helped our employees directly with finding health professionals, navigating claims, fighting for us (me included). It costs extra to add them. Additionally, as a "small group" we did not receive the seamless application process I was expecting ("sold on" is maybe more accurate). It was much more complicated. Thankfully our insurance brokers patiently and effectively created workarounds despite my insistence that they use the "system" (which ended up being the problem). Shame on me for that. Our brokers were, and still are, brilliant.

We used Zenefits across the whole organization for payroll, time and attendance, benefits administration, time off, and as an HRIS
We used Zenefits for over two years. The product itself is great and what enticed us to sign up for the service. Unfortunately, [in my experience] the service had so many issues we recently canceled our contract and moved to a different service entirely. We would have consistent payroll issues where there were discrepancies in the payroll reports and the bank transactions almost every pay run. The customer service [I feel] is HORRIBLE; honestly one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. What ultimately caused us to cancel is we had several issues with the 2020 W-2s posted. I submitted the support cases (3 cases) in January/February. I followed up at least every 1-2 weeks. Radio silence. Any time I would talk to a representative on chat, they would say it's a super busy time of year and someone would reach out soon. No one contacted me regarding the cases until the middle of APRIL, after submitting the cases over 2 months ago. Then they waited until the very last business day (5/14) before the extended filing deadline (5/17) to resolve 2 out of 3 cases. Our 3rd case is STILL OPEN for the W-2 correction (it is June 15). I have followed up on this 3rd case every week and received ZERO response back from customer service. This employee had to file for an extension and is still not able to file his taxes because of Zenefits' unprofessional handling of THEIR MISTAKE on the W-2.If this is how Zenefits handles something as important as a W-2, [in my experience] you should not sign up for this service. Do not waste your time with Zenefits. Even though it is cheaper, [I feel] it is not worth the endless hours wasted addressing the non-stop issues with the service.
Easy to use and navigate for employees, managers and administrators Lower costs compared to other services
Horrible customer service [I feel] that was so bad it caused us to cancel our service [In my experience] Constant payroll errors and discrepancies Several issues with W-2s that were not even corrected until after the filing deadline

We looked at a lot of different systems (Gusto, PEOs, Paylocity, etc.) we chose Zenefits for their all in one system. We needed one place that employees could go to that had all employee benefits in one place. Going paperless was also a big factor for us when switching vendors.
Currently, Zenefits does not integrate into our payroll system, we use ADPRun, they said that it will not integrate until ADP workforce-- when we get to 50 employees. We are happy that it is a paperless system, thinking back to our old FSA/Commuter provider Zenefits is night and day with ease. As HR/Recruiting/Etc at a startup, that makes my life SO much easier.
It makes our HR completely paperless and hiring and terminations are very easy Includes company org. With Zenefits you can leverage carrier pricing and you can see all benefit info online via an easy to navigate dashboard. Great place to have everything all in one (FSA/Commuter, Benefits, STD, Life, LTD).
They have gone through some reorganizations and their customer service has gone down a bit. They didn't do the best job letting me know that there were going to be changes and I only found out about the changes when my contact person never responded to me. They are now charging for things that were free in the past like tracking PTO-- it's frustrating that as a client within the first few months they just add in that cost. They are a little hands off when it come to conveying compliance issues, luckily I created a timeline for our compliance but it would be good to have more guidance on this, as we did with our brick and mortar broker.

-Paperless onboarding/offboarding to support a remote workforce -Integrations with existing ATS, removing the needs for duplicate data entry -Digital document storage, allowing us to digitize all employee files. No more paper! -Time off tracking: Automatic rating to managers for review and approval of all time off requests while keeping the HR team aware of team schedules. Transparent reporting to have conversations with employees regarding the time off trends (% of unplanned versus planned time off). Time off solution also supports Prop 206 mandated sick leave. -Health insurance platform that allows for the execution of open enrollment, qualifying life events and new hire enrollments for all lines of coverage (med, dent, vision, life and disability). HSA app built in to allow employees to review available balances and submit out of pocket expenses. -ACA compliance: Built into existing subscription model that allows for ACA reporting, submission to IRS and 1094/1095 creation without the need for an accountant or an expensive solution. -Business intelligence: Real-time standard and customized reporting. I use this solution heavily as a federal contractor to execute our annual affirmative action reporting.
With a solution like Zenefits, I have managed to reduce the HR budget year-over-year while going 100% paperless. The integration with our applicant tracking system allows me to push data seamlessly from my mobile device directly to Zenefits to extend an offer, wherever, whenever. I am no longer chained to the constraints of my desk, which is critical for an HR team of one. Easily the most comprehensive solution in the market (at this price point) that addresses onboarding/offboarding, automated and customized email triggers to employees, time and attendance, insurance, aca compliance, reporting (standard and custom) and a multitude of integrations. Since becoming a client over 2 years ago, I have gone to market year-over-year, and haven't found a solution that is comparable. Zenefits kills the busy work and allows me to dedicate time to our employees and driving meaningful initiatives, restructuring the experience with HR to being a partnership versus an administrative burden.
I wish the performance management module was baked into the subscription versus an add-on cost. The transition to a new brokerage, OneDigital, has come with its challenges, but I appreciate that the leadership teams both with Zenefits and OneDigital have been willing to personally speak with me to determine how gaps can be bridged to improve my experience as the employer.

I would love it if the custom email triggers were built out with greater functionality. Right now I highly utilize this tool but I see the opportunity for additional growth. The site should have a support number listed in the event of an outage. Right now you can only access support if you are logged into the dashboard.

My overall experience with Zenefits has been great. The pricing has been fair, the service has lived up to expectations, and most importantly, everyone who uses it at my place of work shares the same mindset, more or less. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a decent HR platform, as I am sure it would not disappoint except for when it comes to the occasional technical glitch here and there, which I am sure applies to anything having to do with technology.
What I like most about this software is the layout in which all of its functionalities are presented. Whether it be payroll, benefit elections, or anything else relating to human resource necessities, Zenefits has what both the employee and employer are looking for when it comes to ease of use and variety of functionalities and features. I very much like that the service is offered on both a web browser as well as a smartphone app, which allows for on-location or on-the-go usage. Lastly, I find the pricing for such a great service to be very reasonable, and the method in which pricing is to be determined to be quite fair as well, (when compared to competing companies offering similar services).
As a whole, Zenefits is there for you when you need it and delivers up to expectations. However, if there was one thing that I believe should be somewhat stabilized, it would be the clock in and clock out feature on the mobile app, which at times might be a bit challenging to work with, as it sometimes freezes the phone screen, resulting in the need to restart the whole phone for it to begin working again. This happens on very rare occasions, but when it does happen, it is a bit inconvenient. Other than that one small aspect, there is not much else that is negative to report.

I was thrilled to join a company that had already implemented Zenefits, because the product is dynamic and nimble, fitting our needs. We have been able to use many features, including benefits enrollment, payroll, reporting, integrations with our systems, onboarding, time and attendance and more. Whenever we've had a question we've been able to find the answer via the trainings provided, or by reaching out to the support team. We've also been impressed with features that Zenefits rolled out related to COVID 19 (like the PPP loan estimator, and Truework for health checks. It would be very painful to not have the tool - highly recommended for small and medium sized businesses.
Zenefits is easy to implement and to use. Our team members rarely need any help with the product - it is clear what it can do and how it needs to get done. I appreciate that Zenefits allows us to integrate so many products in one spot (our ATS, learning management and performance management systems all have links back to Zenefits) and that it gets so much done for us. During COVID-19, we've onboarded 100 new employees in a virtual only setting, and much of the ease has been due to how much work Zenefits automates for us.
Sometimes configuration of payroll or benefits can feel tricky - however, my experience with it has been better in Zenefits than other platforms.

In today's life, a very big problem that big companies are facing is that HR is not manageable. I have seen a lot of companies that are facing this problem extremely. So, to overcome these barriers and make the flow smooth a brilliant software had been launched named: ZENEFITS!! It provides a platform that can be easily understood and can be used by an ordinary person. Great Na!! It also stores time and attendance of its users and supports Integration. One great thing is also that it provides a completely automated and electronic employees on-boarding services. It integrates all the functions of HR management under one roof only. This one is Awesome Guys!! It also supports reporting and filing data of ACA as well as it also supports customer service.
This application excludes international payrolls and having some problems in permanent storage of details of employees (Like mailing address of employees). Sometimes very awkward problems arise like managers are not able to access all the details of employees etc. Its Insurance Integration is also very bad as well as it provides only a few reports that are almost of no use. In comparison to its competitors, its prices are a little bit higher which also increases its cons. It has no performance management tools as well as it is not full HRIS, it is a basic system so use according to your needs.

I love the onboarding and sales process. Every person I talk with at Zenefits is pleasant and understanding. Whoever is in charge of the software development and customer service systems should be fired. In order to get a question answered one has to submit to a complex matrix of categories and subjects. I rarely could find the particular category that I needed. Tax Services are a joke. I just received an email on Feb 16 2021 for a quick question that I had on May 7th of 2020. If you have any need for any changes that require a human, find a different way.
Wanted a more integrated system. After 2 years of using Zenefits, I've switched back to Intuit Payroll. Feels so good and 1/2 the work.
Timekeeping is accurate. The time-off request and approval process works great. Like the PTO Calendar. Every task could be performed even if some were clunky.
Navigation is not intuitive and few improvements over 2 years. There were bugs when working with state taxes (for WA). Claimed integration with Quickbooks Desktop is flat out lies. Integration with Quickbooks Online is weak at best. DON'T TRUST Zenefits to make changes to your payroll tax filings. Will take 6+ months to get a response.
